OAK BLUFFS — Finance Committee reviews departmental budgets as Wastewater Department confronts unexpected $548,000 bond payment and looming $25 million grinder pump replacement project. The immediate obligation will be covered with retained earnings of approximately $1.1 million, though future capital needs are substantial. Fire Chief Stephen Foster reported a 16 percent budget increase and mounting staffing challenges from reduced volunteer availability.
Shellfish Constable Donovan McElligatt reported the Town received 6.3 million seeds from Martha's Vineyard Shellfish Group for $42,000, value that would cost approximately $145,000 on the open market. Electricity and sludge disposal costs are also rising sharply in the Wastewater Department.
